Perennial ryegrass is the most important and
widely used cool season forage grass in the world. In the past the role for
perennial ryegrass in North America has been limited, mostly because existing
varieties were adapted only to regions with mild climates. In the last few
years, Barenbrug has successfully introduced newer and better varieties into
the USA. Perennial ryegrass is persistent if soil
fertility is high. It is also tolerant to intensive grazing and cutting as it
has the ability to regrow quickly after defoliation. As the different
varieties exhibit a wide range of characteristics in respect to heading
dates, earliness of growth, disease resistance, digestibility and
persistency, Perennial ryegrass can fulfill the needs of many farming
systems. Careful management and selecting the right variety will ensure the
best results. Barenbrug offers several blends and straight varieties. The
benefit of blends is their wider adaptability in different areas. Throughout
the past years these blends have proven their value to many farmers in the
USA. BG-34
is the most widely used BG mixture. The combination of winter hardiness and
late maturity has made this blend very popular. BG-34 has proven performance
in the Midwest, the Northeast and the Pacific Northwest. Many farmers have
observed extremely high forage quality, and as a result animal performance is
very impressive. Milk production increases of 8-10 lbs. per cow, per day,
have been repeatedly reported. Live weight gains of beef cattle exceeding 2.5
pounds per day have also been reported. “very late maturing and winterhardy” Primary
use: later producing high quality pastures, or as a combination with
Alfalfa in colder areas
